The Sustainable Business Group have produced the STATE OF THE APPAREL SECTOR SPECIAL  REPORT WATER for the Global Leadership Award in Sustainable Apparel (GLASA) 2015 which focuses on WATER.

This  milestone report assesses the human, environmental and business case for accelerating water management improvements in the apparel sector in light of an increasingly water constrained world. It describes what these challenges mean for the industry, and what practices - technological, financial, policy, advocacy and collaborative - are currently underway to reduce the water footprint of apparel and textiles.  Following the GLASA symposium on August 27 2015 in Stockholm, Sweden in conjunction with World Water Week and an open consultation process, the final report is now available to download.

BACKGROUND: Global Leadership Award in Sustainable Apparel (GLASA) 2015

 GLASA was launched in 2013 to inspire bold and courageous leadership in the apparel sector and to mobilise key stakeholders around promising ideas and practices that can significantly improve the sustainability performance of the apparel industry.  Each year the GLASA process includes a state of the sector analysis, an award scheme to recognise leadership and best practice, and a global symposium.

GLASA 2015 chose the following five finalists which represent leading water practices in the award categories (Advocacy, Technological Innovation, Collaboration, Brand Leadership in the Supply Chain, Manufacturer Leadership in the Supply Chain). Together they illustrate a comprehensive range of approaches that will help the apparel sector transform they way we manage our precious water resources.

  •  China Water Risk - Works in the area of advocacy and investor engagement;
  • Dyecoo - Offers a radical innovation - waterless dyeing;
  • Levi Strauss & Co. - Attacks water challenges systematically, from cotton fields to consumer use;
  • Pratibha Syntex - Has invested in vertical integration and the holistic management of water;
  • Sweden Textile Water Initiative  - Established a model for how brands, suppliers, government and technology providers can collaborate to reduce water use.
